Classic – and most likely a bachelor

A woman named Liz Clark has been sailing around the world for the past 3 years.  She gave a talk and a slide show about her travels at a stop in California.

“During Liz’s slide show she was asked a question about what she eats aboard her boat, Swell. She replied that it varied from elaborate meals while in port to something as simple as eating beans, unheated, out of the can, during a crossing. After her answer, the guy behind me whispers to his friend – “dude, I do that at my house – the unheated beans out of the can thing”.”

Click here for a slide show about a fishing trip she took  in the Line islands.  It’s pretty interesting the techniques they’ve developed to catch big tuna.

Judging by the number of times this video has been watched you have probably already seen it, but just in case…

I don’t like Aquariums, fish tanks, etc because most of these creatures were made to move in huge spaces and it just seems wrong to contain them in a tank, no matter how large.  That being said, they are so beautiful to watch and maybe this is one way to increase our awareness of the state the oceans are in, and push toward the next step of taking action.

The site I first saw this on said to eat wild caught fish as little as possibly and to be aware of how different species are caught and eat the ones that are caught as sustainably as possible.. Good advice.  Click here to educate yourself.

PS – I love the song

As a very part-time skateboarder (from my car to work is basically it), this is pretty amazing.

And yes, I am following Jay.

Gleaned Wisdom 1

July 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

When I read books, listen to sermons, and so on, I keep a little notebook close by to write down ideas that that jump out.  I’m one short page from filling up my first notebook, so I thought I would share some of the things I found helpful, or provoking.  Some may only have meaning to me, I guess that’s a benefit of context, but maybe one or two will grab you.  Here goes:

Life is not one big event, but many ordinary events that can be lived meaningfully.

Good intentions that are not started within 24 hours will never happen.

“Better to light one match than to curse the darkness” – If you feel strongly about less energy consumption, you can volunteer to help someone of lower income to insulate their house, replace light bulbs, etc.  This will mean less energy cost for them and less energy used.

A good definition of work = taking what God created good and arranging it for the best possible purposes.

It is possible to be a Christian and just waste your life

What role does your money play in your ultimate security in life?

Today does not have to be a carbon copy of yesterday.

In terms of consumption – “much less, but way better quality.”

In a diverse group such as a church – in worship each Sunday there should be things we like and things we don’t like.  The question is, “Does it gorify God?”  If so, and if it helps someone else, great.

Why is tithing not discussed in the New Testament?  In light of the NT witness to simplicity, and it’s statements on wealth – the tithe is simply not a sufficiently radical concept to embody the carefree unconcern for possessions that marks life in the kingdom of God.

Hope is contagious

Calvin Y Hobbes

June 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The next time someone is in the hospital or otherwise laid up, give them a Calvin and Hobbes book.  Good, clean fun.  The tenth anniversary edition has a lot of insights into Bill Watterson’s inspiration and thoughts behind some of the comics.  Did you know Calvin is named after the 16th century theologian John Calvin?

Good Morning Mr. Duck

June 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Took our surfboards down to the outdoor pool this morning for some paddling/training.  About halfway through our session, one of these guys joined us in our lane.

DEARTH OF DUCKS

I always like seeing wildlife, even if it’s just a common duck.  And even if it’s just in a swimming pool.  It reminds me of the beauty and wonder of this world we find ourselves in.

Vacation

February 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I am taking a vacation from this space for a little while.

I have some decisions to make and things to figure out over the next while and feel this would help reduce the clutter in my brain and allow me to focus a bit more.  It seems over the past number of months, and maybe years, I have been more and more inclined to take in information of all sorts, without taking the time to process and reflect on it.  I don’t believe this is a good thing.

So.

For the next four weeks or more I will not be here.  I would still love to get a comment from you, but I won’t read it for a bit.

Thanks for checking in.
