When I read books, listen to sermons, and so on, I keep a little notebook close by to write down ideas that that jump out. I’m one short page from filling up my first notebook, so I thought I would share some of the things I found helpful, or provoking. Some may only have meaning to me, I guess that’s a benefit of context, but maybe one or two will grab you. Here goes:
Life is not one big event, but many ordinary events that can be lived meaningfully.
Good intentions that are not started within 24 hours will never happen.
“Better to light one match than to curse the darkness” – If you feel strongly about less energy consumption, you can volunteer to help someone of lower income to insulate their house, replace light bulbs, etc. This will mean less energy cost for them and less energy used.
A good definition of work = taking what God created good and arranging it for the best possible purposes.
It is possible to be a Christian and just waste your life
What role does your money play in your ultimate security in life?
Today does not have to be a carbon copy of yesterday.
In terms of consumption – “much less, but way better quality.”
In a diverse group such as a church – in worship each Sunday there should be things we like and things we don’t like. The question is, “Does it gorify God?” If so, and if it helps someone else, great.
Why is tithing not discussed in the New Testament? In light of the NT witness to simplicity, and it’s statements on wealth – the tithe is simply not a sufficiently radical concept to embody the carefree unconcern for possessions that marks life in the kingdom of God.
